Tropical Birdland was started in 1982. When Richard Hopper decided to change his hobby into a business by opening his bird collection to the public. After an initial struggle with the council, Birdland opened its doors to visitors in 1984. With the new source of income the aviaries and gardens were soon expanded along with the introduction of rare species. Hand rearing the offspring of common species along with breeding endangered species became the main goal for Birdland.
Burglaries, vermin and disease problems caused Birdland to struggle through the 1980s and early 1990s; they caused severe and irreparable damage to the breeding birds. With time, dedication and money the problems became controlled.
Tropical Birdlands enthusiasm has now established a wonderful collection of breeding endangered species. All kept in an environment as close as possible as how nature intended them to live.
In recent years we have:
A/ Successfully developed a system, which enabled us to train parrots to fly free and come back to our buildings every night.
B/ By studying them in their wild habitat and discovering the importance of grits and clays. We have developed our diets that we feed, to be as close to what they would find in nature.
C/ Taken under our wing hundreds of problem ex- pet parrots and rehabilitated them into a breeding environment and or free flying environment.
D/ Developed a method of what we believe to be the best way of keeping parrots as pets. We are now trying to implement this to all people who keep or want to keep parrots as pets.
Tropical Birdland will always continue to create the best environment possible for all the birds that are here. We now want to start new and bigger projects but we are asking for
your help!
Below: The Early Days.

Here you can see some early photographs or our birdgarden. You will be amazed at how different it looks today. We are always adding and improving. We started with under 100 birds in 1982, and we now have over 600.
